Psychic Distance

CRAFT TALK

"Psychic distance" is another way of thinking about Point of View. I prefer "Psychic Distance" because it reminds us of the experiential gap between narrative and character. If the narration is psychically close to the protagonist, the story will be written in first-person POV, close-third, or free indirect. On the other hand, if the psychic distance is great, the author might write in third-person omniscient, in "Voice of God" mode. The closer the gap between author and protagonist, the more intimate the relationship between reader and protagonist. The bigger the gap, the more removed the reader will feel. Interestingly, in second-person POV, the narration is psychically close to the ostensible protagonist (that is, the narrator is the speaker), but who's on center stage? You.
